Judged By The Way You Look

I have men in my life that tell me all the time that I get my jobs because I have boobs. They believe that just because I am a woman I have a better chance to get a job.

When I was younger and started looking for jobs my boyfriend at the time told me that I could get a job anywhere that has a male hiring manager. I told him that was not true and went out looking for jobs.

I went into XXX (would rather not put the name of this grocery store) and asked to speak to the manager. When he seen me his eyes lit up and he had a big smile on his face. I figured it was just because he was the manager and he had to be like that. He told me that I just need to put in my application in online and he will pull it. He wrote down my name and told me to call in a couple of days after I do it, which I did. I went in for my interview and he asked me why do you want to work here you’re so pretty; you could get a job anywhere. I told him I need a job because I don’t live at home anymore. He just kept telling me how pretty I was throughout the whole interview.

I worked there for three years and he thought I was the prettiest, hardworking, and smart young lady he has ever met. He even tried getting me to date his son. He was a good boss, but I do believe I got the job because of my looks.

My next job I applied for was Scoreboard and they said you’re hired because you have the right look. Then she told me the dress code, which was short shorts, low cut shirts, make up, and nails done. There were no men working there unless they were cooking in the back. I worked there for three days and I was stocked on Facebook, followed home, and men grabbing my butt constantly. I told the manager and she did nothing about it, so I quit.

I got another interview at Gators and she told me that she checked out my Facebook before calling me in. She said that I have the look to work here. I decided not to work there because I remember how my last job went that said that to me.

Finally, I went in to the Tampa Bay Times Forum to bring in my resume and fill out an application. I spoke to the manager and she kept telling me that she doesn’t hire people without experience, but I was so pretty and young I could have the job. She told me that I was young and really beautiful over and over and over again. I was a little uncomfortable, but it was a good job so I took it.

All in all, I learned that my boyfriend at the time was right people do hire people because they are good looking. But, one thing he was wrong about was only men judge that way because I have had multiple women judge me for it because of the men clientele.

Why You Should Go To That Interview (Even if You Don’t Want To)

Sexual Harassment

Most employers have no idea about people getting sexually harassed in their work place. You never think it’s going to happen to you until it does. My sister was going through this situation, where she was working her first job at 18 years old and this older man about 60 or so started writing her letters, trying to kiss her, and take her out. She was scared and didn’t know what to do. She was scared to go into work each day. She would check if he’s working and avoid him. She told me she would have to hid sometimes because he knew she was working and she didn’t want him to continue crossing the line.

The guy she was seeing kept telling her she needed to tell someone or he would because she was so scared. She broke down one day because school was killing her, I was in the hospital, and she was working 40 hours a week. She told her manager and they didn’t fire him because he worked there so long, but they did write him up and told him he needs to keep his distance from her. He did and eventually he quit. My sister was still scared when they worked the same shift, but she got through it and she knows next time she needs to speak up right away before it gets out of hand again.

Around that same time I was going through something like that, but we didn’t live together so we had no idea what the other was going through. I started working my job and the second day I was still in training. The guy who was training me was about 48 years old and he was showing me the paper work during the event and I was on the floor counting as he was writing. He kept telling me how pretty I was and when I got up he pushed me up against the wall, held my arms down, and tried to kiss me. I moved and was telling him to get off me and someone walked in and he let me go. He acted like nothing happened. He was the bar leaders and he has worked there for like ten years and I felt like no one would believe me or care.

He got my number from someone and starting blowing up my phone asking me to come over and go in his hot tub. He would constantly ask me out and tell me how beautiful and young I was. It was so gross and very unwelcomed. I never texted him back unless it was about work because he was the bar leader. He would nag me about not texting him back and I would try and hid from him I was so scared to go into work because he was there I would try to run away from him when he tried to come up to me. Everything he did was inappropriate.

I made a really good friend there and I told her what happened to me after she told me that he kept making comments about her boobs. Also, he kept asking her to sleep with him. She was much older than me about 43 and she looked at me as a daughter. She told me that it’s not right and she told his boss. They questioned both of us. I told them what happened and they did nothing to him. They gave him a warning and they didn’t make us work with him. I felt like that wasn’t good enough because he has been accused of this stuff before.

Another friend of ours was also harassed by him; the same way as the 43 year old lady. He just kept asking her to sleep with him and she told him it was inappropriate and she was married. He kept talking about her boobs as well and she didn’t like that. She would and they continued to do nothing, but “warn” him. He stopped making comments to us, but who knows what he does to the new girls that come in.

A couple of weeks after the first incident, they had me work with another man who has worked there for a long time. I kept locking myself out of this new bar I was working at and he kept opening the door for me because he had keys. He gave me his number just in case I lock myself out again. He started telling me how he has kids a couple years older than me. He told me I was a very good looking girl and he couldn’t understand how I didn’t have a boyfriend. After work he went out and got drunk and starting texting my phone asking me for naked pictures and I asked him to please stop texting me. He continued and sent me pictures of his penis and texting me dirty things. I turned my phone off because he wouldn’t stop no matter how much I told him to. Not too long after he quit and I was so thankful.

I understand men can be Sexually harassed, but from my experience it’s always women. I’ve never known a man to say that, but they could be embarrassed because it’s not as common as for women.

Sexual harassment is unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature that tends to create a hostile or offensive work environment.

Interview With An Incredible Woman

Knowing a woman who has been through heartache, cancer, disappointment, and is still striving in the business world is one woman that I look up too. Yes, she is my step mother and I feel like the luckiest step kid in the whole wide world. She came into my life about four or five years ago and changed my life in a positive way.
I’ve never met someone who was truly happy ALL THE TIME! This incredible woman doesn’t sweat the small things. You could throw anything her way and she will find a way to make it positive. She has been helping me and looking out for me since day one. She makes it so easy to love her. I’ve known anyone who can come in your life for one day and change everything. All of my friends who meet her ONE TIME always ask me about her every time I see them. They are always wondering when they can come with me to hang out with her. My dad is always like, “What I am chop liver.” I tell him, “Basically!” Cathy always laughs and reassures him that he is an amazing man and they want to see him too. My dad is so lucky to have this woman in his life. All the step kids couldn’t be happier.
At 23 she was thrown into a career that she did most of her life and no one thought she could do it because she was a woman, but they had no other choice, but to let her try. She was the only woman and the youngest employee out of the eleven locations that Tang had. She did so well that promoted her not even six months later to manager her own branch in Atlanta, Georgia. She blow up so big that she decided to go into business for herself and all of her customers followed because they trusted her and the way she does business. She started out with five thousand dollars and turned it into a million in the first year and two million the second. She is truly incredible. Once she told me this I was like teach me your ways; please! She was never afraid of going out on her own because she believes in herself. She knows that she has the ability to do anything she sets her mind too. Then, she went through a divorce and that didn’t stop her. Most women would shut down after being with someone you love for so long and having them treat you so poorly and belittle you all the time because they wanted you to need them. Not her, she came out stronger. She continued with her business had a child already and was expecting another.
Then devastating news came her way and she took it with her head held high and faith in God on her side. She was delivering her child and when they were going to put the epidurals in they told her this looks like cancer and because it spread so fast they knew it was. She was scared, but she knew God had a plan for her. She put her life in his hands and stayed calm. She told me when I was interviewing her that she is not scared to die because everything happens for a reason and God has a plan for everyone. She told me she isn’t scared of death because she has fought it and won. After going through that she wanted to give back even more than she already does and she felt the only way to do that is to donate her time and help other people. She started at Hospice to help people who are dying and have no one. She also volunteers her time to teaching people who want to save money and she made/runs the website for Coupon Saver Mom and she teaches classes to help people who learn more visual or hands on. She is the warmest, happiest, loving, caring, incredible, amazing, perfect, strong, independent, motherly, and great woman. They are so lucky to have her because there is nothing she wouldn’t do for people, even if she doesn’t know you she would still give you the shirt off her back. Like I said I have never met anyone like her before and every time I talk to her or see her I always think how lucky I am to know her. She has made my life better. She has been a mother to me more than you can imagine. She is very modest. When I was interview her she was like, “This is weird talking about myself.” Because she is always concerned about everyone else, that’s who she is.
I’m glad she has my dad now to show her that she can be self once in a while because if anyone deserves it, it’s her. My dad has never met anyone like her before either, someone so caring, honest, loving, strong, and independent. He fell in love right away, but who couldn’t. Once she comes in your life one time you will never want her to leave because she will change you by just one smile, one conversation, and one encounter. She’s never mad or upset. She has made me a better student, woman, and person. I couldn’t explain to you how thankful and grateful I am to know her. I never thought my dad should be with someone else, but she changed my mind, if anyone could it would be her.
She now is working in the funeral business running many locations and a couple different businesses. She is taking care of two kids, three step kids, and a husband, who all love her unconditionally. She is a busy woman with all that, the volunteering, and her jobs. I hope you like the interview I have made of this woman because just watching it you will get a glimpse of how strong, successful, independent, and amazing she is. She has changed my life for the better in every aspect. I couldn’t be happier to have her in my life. She can teach me so much about business and management. I can’t wait to graduate and live up to the woman she hopes for me to be.
I could keep going about her because there is not enough words that could describe how incredible this woman really is.

Don’t Trust Your Friends!

My mother has been a big part of my life. She taught me how to ride a bike, how to swim, and how to be a strong and independent woman I am today. She showed me that school is important and can only help you in the long run. She is an amazing, incredible, and inspiring role model. I am so really lucky to have her as a mother. Some people don’t have a role model, a mentor, or a mother that is there for them no matter what and shows them how life works.
She is a very strong and independent woman. She had big dreams and always strived for more. She went back to school at an older age to receive her Associates Degree, while she was taking care of her husband and three kids. She was trying to better her job, herself, and her quality of life. She went to night classes and worked during the day. She showed her kids how important school really is. She has made a big impact in all of her kids’ lives, showing them that you should always follow your dreams and dream big because no matter what succeed or fail at least you tried.
She always says, “If you don’t put yourself in the game then you have no chance of winning.”
This interview is going to be about my mother trusting her “friend” I know I’m her daughter, but I still don’t know this whole story. One thing this has taught me is never trust your friends when it comes to business and/or money, which has been important in my life.
My friend asked me to borrow Two thousand dollars to help out his parents and I’ve known him for five years. We were really close and he has always been there for me. I let him borrow it and we were never the same as friends after that. He was on time with his payments in the beginning and then he started using the “friend card.” It took him a long time to pay back all that money and I even let him pay me two hundred dollars every three weeks, which he makes more than that in one pay check each week and he lives at home with his parents with no bills. All in all, when money is involved things change.
Things don’t always work out as planned, but I truly believe everything happens for a reason. So, what I learned from my mother is when life knocks you down, you need to just pick yourself back up again because if you don’t you will be stuck at a standstill and it’s even harder to get out of it. When one door closes another one opens. I’m a full believe in this because I’ve seen my mother get knocked down one to many times and always crawling and working twice as hard to get out.
I love my mother and am very grateful to have her in my life.

Someone who always dreamed big and it worked for him was Steve Jobs.

THINGS ARE FINALLY DIFFERENT FOR WOMEN!

Women have had it tough in this big world that we live in. Being born in the 1990’s I didn’t really understand what is was like for women before me. I’m young and naïve to think things weren’t hard for my mother, there mother, and so on. Every generation of women experiences the new laws a little differently. Things have slowly getting better; SLOWLY!

When I go to my Grandparents house they love to tell me the stories about how we have things so much easier than they did. Our generation doesn’t understand what hard times look like. We don’t understand how things are supposed to be. They tell me it is so crazy how many divorces there are now a days because when they were young and you fight you don’t get a divorce you make it work no matter what. You made the commitment to spend your life with that person in front of God, which means nothing to this generation. I love going over there talking to them because they tell you how it is. My grandmother tells me a woman’s place is in the kitchen and you should wait on your husband hand and foot. I tell her things aren’t like that anymore grandma, women are allowed to be independent. She just doesn’t agree. She loves to tell my boyfriend that I should be treating him right, feeding him, giving him anything he needs and/or wants, and I should be waiting on him. We all just laugh, but grandma really does believe that’s how things are supposed to be because she grew up that way. He dad beat her and step brother molested her. All she knew is she needed to get out of that house, so when she turned eight-teen she asked my grandfather to marry her and that was fifty two years ago. She never worked a day in her life, but she waited on my grandfather who did.

Women were so different then, they didn’t believe they were good enough to be doing what men do. There were some who stood up for themselves, which is how things started to slowly change. It took until 1963 for Congress to pass the Equal Pay Act, making it illegal for employers to pay woman less than what a man would receive for the same job. But, does that mean there still weren’t companies out there not following this law or finding loop holes around it. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act bars discrimination in employment on the basis of race and SEX. At the same time the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was established to investigate complaints and convict offenders.

Some women wouldn’t say a word because they didn’t want to lose their jobs that they work so hard to get. People are still being sued today because they are discriminating against women being able to be hired as top management positions. For example, Publix was just sued and the women won. I work for Publix in hopes of moving up, so when I heard about this I asked my manager about it and he told me, “Yeah, which is why they hired a bunch of women even if they weren’t the most qualified for the job.” I couldn’t believe my manager actually said that. Some people just don’t believe women can do as good of a job as men still to this day. Women have proved themselves over and over again to these “MEN” and it still doesn’t change their mind because of the way things used to be. PUBLIX ARTICLE

2009- “President Obama signed the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act, which allows victims of pay discrimination to file a complaint with the government against their employer within 180 days of their last paycheck. Previously, victims (most often women) were only allowed 180 days from the date of the first unfair paycheck. This Act is named after a former employee of Goodyear who alleged that she was paid 15–40% less than her male counterparts, which was later found to be accurate.”

This just proves that in 2009 there are people still discriminating against women. They don’t believe we are equal and now the courts will do something about it.
